“I’m sorry that all I have to send you is this letter. And I am sorry for all that a letter cannot be. Even the best letter is only just a piece of someone” — The World to Come

I really like letters. This is particularly interesting to me because in secondary school, I hated letter writing. I hated that I was never sure where the address went. I hated that I never got the sign off right. I hated that I couldn’t even figure out what kind of tone to use but now- now I love letters. The number 1 thing on my birthday wish list was to get a letter. Sadly I did not get any.

I did not necessarily want to get a letter about myself. That’s another thing about letter writing in secondary school, it felt like it always had to be about you.

Write a letter to your friend about the long holiday

I think the best thing about letters, isn’t what they can say about a person, although letters are incredible ways to learn about a person. I think letters have the magical power of making small things much more special.

In the place of sending a text saying “I like coffee.” In a letter, you can say so much more. You can talk about the smell of coffee, that there is no better smell than it. The best thing about coffee shops isn’t that they sell coffee, it’s that they smell like it. You can talk about the ritual of making coffee. Very few things are as celebrated in process as they are in consumption, coffee is one of those few things.

Letters have the magical power of making small things special.

My favourite movie is a movie about letters. About sending emails in a time when it was novel. It is the type of romance that I daydream about. About the exchange of thoughts and ideas, about a secret shared interest in books, about masked identities adding exciting mystery.

I think people should send letters more. About anything. You can start by sending me one. I promise I will send one back
